Apple Revamping The Mac With Mountain Lion

Apple released the first beta version of its next generation OS X software earlier this week, known as Mountain Lion. Mountain Lion, which is expected to be released sometime in the summer, is built off of android installs Lion, Apple's current operating software for Macs, and the iPad, iPhone, and iCloud.

In the beta version only available to Apple Developer users and demoed on Apple's website for non-developers, Mountain Lion introduces Messages, Notes, Reminders and Game Center to the Mac, as well as Notification Center, Share Sheets, Twitter integration and AirPlay Mirroring to stay more up-to-date and connected with others.

“The Mac is on a roll, growing faster than the PC for 23 straight quarters, and with Mountain Lion things get even better,” said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, in a press release . “The developer preview of Mountain Lion comes just seven months after the incredibly successful release of Lion and sets a rapid pace of development for the world's most advanced personal computer operating system.”

Messages, an updated version of iChat, allows users to send unlimited messages, high-quality photos and videos directly from a Mac to another Mac or iOS device. Messages will also continue to support AIM, Jabber, Yahoo! Messenger, and Google Chat.

As seen on iOS devices, Mountain Lion will include Notification Center on the Mac. Notification Center provides easy access to alerts from built-in apps such as Mail, Calendar, Messages, Reminders, Updates and any third-party apps.

Share Sheets make it easy to share links, photos and videos directly from a web page or an application. With Twitter integrated throughout Mountain Lion, users can sign on once and tweet directly from Safari, Photo Booth, and other apps.

Mountain Lion also introduces AirPlay Mirroring, an easy way to wirelessly send a HD video stream of what's on a Mac to an HDTV using Apple TV.

Mac or iOS users who have an Apple ID or iCloud account can automatically set up Contacts, Mail, Calendar, Messages, FaceTime and Find My Mac. The new iCloud Documents pushes any changes to all Macs and iOS devices associated with the account so documents are always up-to-date.

As stated on Apple's website, Mountain Lion will be available for download from the Mac App Store in the summer of 2012. The price for Mountain Lion has not been announced yet.
